APPLETON, Wis (WISS) – The Appleton Fire Department is enhancing its emergency medical services by adding Advanced Life Support (ALS) services to its box of tools and support.
Prior to the department’s certification by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services as a 911 Non-transporting Paramedic Provider, paramedics with the Appleton Fire Department could only administer CPR and a total of five medications. The upgrade includes new medical equipment like heart monitors, intubation tools, and more. Division Chief Ryan Homman said it will allow a more integrated response with Gold Cross Ambulance.
“This isn’t about replacing ambulance care, it’s about enhancing it,” Homman said. “We’re now better positioned to stabilize patients early and assist ambulance crews more effectively once they arrive. It strengthens our community partnership and ensures better outcomes for our residents.”
The change allows Appleton Fire Department paramedics to initiate more advanced care within minutes of arrival.
“This is a significant step forward in our mission to serve the people of Appleton,” said Fire Chief Jeremy Hansen. “Upgrading to ALS service ensures that when seconds count, our crews can deliver critical interventions immediately, before a transporting ambulance arrives.”
