Newman Catholic names Kati Goetsch new girls’ basketball coach
Newman Catholic’s new girls’ basketball coach won’t need a tour to know her way around the school and gym. Kati Goetsch is the new leader of the Cardinals, Newman Catholic announced in a press release on Tuesday. Goetsch (as Kati Tehan) was a member of both the first Newman team to earn a WIAA state tournament berth in 2001 and of the Cardinals’ first state championship team in 2002.
In addition to being a three-year starter on the hardwood, Goetsch also was a Track and Field standout at Newman before graduating in 2002. She has since been elected to the Newman Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame.
Goetsch, who has been coaching basketball at the middle school and elementary levels at Newman since 2021, replaces Casey Clausius as head coach following a 5-20 season in 2024-25.
“Kati’s work with the youth teams at Newman Catholic will benefit the entire girls basketball program,” said Justin Oshefsky, Newman Catholic High School Athletic Director. “Her passion for player development, team culture, and professionalism will elevate the experience for everyone involved. I look forward to the direction Kati will lead this program and to welcoming our alumni back to Newman Catholic.”
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to work with our high school players and their families, and to continue supporting a strong and growing youth program here at Newman Catholic,” said Goetsch. “Our girls basketball program has a lot of positive momentum and I look forward to elevating our teams and our players to their highest potential.”
Newman opens the 2025-26 season on November 18th vs. Columbus Catholic in Marshfield.
