State senator Gwen Moore talks congressional redistricting, political landscape on “The Maggie Daun Show”

WISCONSIN (CIVIC MEDIA) – Democratic State Senator Gwen Moore joined Civic Media’s “The Maggie Daun Show” to discuss congressional district lines and the radicalism of politics today.

Congressional district lines is a partisan issue that has long permeated the legal grounds of Wisconsin’s state capitol – the state’s high court had just declined to consider the issue for a second straight year in late June. The topic sparks controversy on a national scale as well, as Democratic state senators from Texas decided to flee the state with the intent of preventing the state’s Assembly from approving redrawn congressional maps.

The Texas GOP’s proposal comes at the behest of President Trump, who aims to bolster the U.S. House of Representatives’ Republican majority with the new seats created by the redistricting.

Senator Moore says that not only will people of diverse backgrounds in Texas be misrepresented if the proposal gets approved, but Pres. Trump’s method of maintaining control of the House is a threat to America’s democracy.

“This is really the threat of losing our democracy,” Senator Moore remarked. “You know, as Democrats, we were criticized for just talking abstractly about democracy but, you know, let the lesson begin. This is one of them.”

The drastic measure that Texas State Democrats took in fleeing the state in order to block approval for the new congressional map is a microcosm in a spreading philosophy that the Democratic Party must go to extremes to combat the radical actions of Republicans. California Governor Gavin Newsome has threatened to initiate a major congressional redistricting of his own that would overwhelmingly favor Democrats if Pres. Trump continues to advocate for the additional seats in Texas.

Senator Moore says it may be a “race to the bottom” between both parties because following procedure is becoming a detraction for Democrats.

“I believe that Texas is going to pass this map. Unless there’s some intervention by the courts, it may lead to a race to the bottom because I think that one of the criticisms that our democratic voters have of us is that we’re ethical. We try to follow the rules (and) the rule of law, and it’s a bad thing.”
